3D Applications on Mobile Devices

Team: Burigat S., Buttussi F., Chittaro L.

In recent years, the increasing performance of mobile computing devices such as smartphones has allowed them to support more and more complex graphics applications. Interactive visualization of 3D models on mobile devices would significantly benefit applications such as indoor navigators and mobile tourist guides, on-site monitoring and annotation of architectural designs at construction sites, evacuation training and evacuation guidance. In this project, we are working on: (i) a mobile player (called MobiX3D) for X3D and H-Anim content. The rendering engine of MobiX3D supports classic lighting and shading algorithms, and exploits hierarchical view frustum culling and portal culling for interactively visualizing large 3D architectural models on mobile devices; (ii) using location-aware 3D models (through RFID for interios and GPS for exteriors) in evacuation guidance, fitness, cultural heritage and tourism applications; (iii) using 3D virtual humans for motivation support, procedure demonstrations (in fitness applications), and communication support (more specifically, sign language for deaf people).
