Supporting Blind Users in Selecting From Very Long Lists of Items on Mobile Phones

Abstract: Searching for an item in a long ordered list that does not fit the screen is a frequent task when using mobile devices. This paper explores four different interfaces to support blind users in carrying out this task. Two of them are based on the idea of treeaugmentation of a list, proposed by Furnas, and differ in their depth versus breadth ratio. The other two interfaces adopt the more traditional technique of list scrolling based respectively on standard multitap and T9 keyboard entry. The paper reports also on the results of a pilot study of the four interfaces conducted on two blind users.
