Keynotes
People Versus Information: the evolution of mobile technology
Richard Harper, Appliance Studio, UK
(Chair: Mathias Schneider-Hufschmidt, Siemens, Germany)
Richard Harper is Director of User Understanding at the Appliance Studio. He leads the company's work in the area, and contributes personally to many projects.
Richard was director of the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey in the UK where he is still professor of socio-digital systems. Amongst other topics he was concerned with mobile technologies, knowledge work and the home of the future. His research was funded by Vodafone, T-Mobile, Cellnet, the UMTS Forum, Orange, Consignia, the BBC, Hewlett-Packard, ICL, Fujitsu, Lloyds-TSB, the EU, the UK Government, and others. He was previously with Xerox's EuroPARC.
His most recent books include Inside the IMF, Retail Finance and Organisational Change, The Myth of the Paperless Office, The Wireless World, and the forthcoming Inside the Smart Home.
The Zen of Everyday Encounters: Spontaneous Interaction in Ubiquitous Systems
Tim Kindberg, HP Labs, USA
[5 Sep 2003. Last-minute news: unfortunately, Tim Kindberg has informed
us that he will not give his talk.]
[7 Sep 2003. We are happy to announce a great new keynote. See details below.]
Interacting with the Ubiquitous Computer
Albrecht Schmidt,University of Munich, Germany
(Chair: Bruno von Niman, Ericsson, Sweden)
Albrecht Schmidt is a researcher with the media informatics group at the University of Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitdt M|nchen, Germany). His major research interest is in novel user interfaces and new forms of interaction enabled by Ubiquitous Computing. Albrecht previously worked as a research associate at Lancaster University in the UK. In projects under the European Disappearing Computer Initiative and within the EQUATOR Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration in the UK he explored new interactive systems. His particular interest was on the question how to prototype physical user interfaces at the crossroads of computer science, ethnography, and design. Formerly Albrecht was a research assistant at the University of Karlsruhe, where he worked on context-aware and sensor-based user interfaces for mobile devices. He received his PhD in computer science from Lancaster University. He is currently Program Co-chair of Ubicomp 2003.
